Since the mid-2019, the inescapable anxiety and desperation cover the city. The blunt and direct control from the Chinese government accidentally sparked the fire on the street. The fear of being controlled, the loss of autonomy and the pessimistic future became the motifs to ask for change. Hello Stranger is an ongoing body of work about the depiction of the current atmosphere of Hong Kong, the re-evaluation of the identity of Hongkonger, and the phantasy to the future. The metaphor of botany reveals doubting and unfamiliar. I photographed my friends who shared the same concern and the strangers who can never hide their doubtful gaze.
The tiny fragments of daily life construct the narrative and the notion. Instead of stressing the intense confrontation and the radical approach of the government reacted to the demands, I consider the implicit influences of daily life could give more sense to the whole picture. Therefore, after the monstrous protests and rallies, I dig into the physical presence left in the conflict between power and resistance to search for the phantasy that belongs to my beloved Hongkonger and me. The remaining reminds the inevitable passage of time, so as the light, continuously reminds how little we are in physical, but mighty in spirit.
